de'Arnise Keep (AR1300)

After you have cleansed the keep of its evil, the maps will change to AR1304. If you would like to see the new map, click on SHOW NEW MAP.

    You should really stock up on fire or acid based damage weapons and ammunition in order to breeze through this area. Memorize fire and acid spells as well (Burning Hands, Aganazzar's Scorcher, Melf's Acid Arrow etc.) in order to be able to finish off the trolls inside the keep.
    This area is good for the beginning party, it's simple enough and has sufficient experience and equipment.

    When you first arrive here you should go east and find the Fort nearby.

    Drawbridge

    You will notice that the drawbridge is risen so you'll need to find a way to lower it or find an altogether different way inside the keep. There's also one small troll in the way. Kill it and be sure to finish it off with fire or acid.

ICE TROLL: 174 exp.

    The Fort

    Inside this Fort you'll find the remnants of de'Arnise defenders: Nalia and Captain Arat with a couple of guards. You should speak to both in order to receive useful information about the enemies that took control of the keep. You can pickpocket them in the meantime.

    Pick the pockets.
CAPTAIN ARAT: Acid Arrows (10), 7 Gold, Long Sword;
DE'ARNISE GUARDS: Arrows of Fire (20), 2 Gold, Spear (2).

    Nalia will explain to you that the keep is beset by trolls and that there are other creatures helping them. Nalia also tells you that to kill a troll you'll need to finish him with fire or acid. She also tells you to find Daleson inside - he may have a more detailed information. She will tell you about the secret way into the keep - it is just a bit north of the Fort.
    You can let Nalia with you or do the keep yourself, the choice is yours.

    Captain Arat is the garrison commander. Talk to him and he'll give you some fire arrows. Captain Arat will describe the onslaught that the keep was under and mention that Lord de'Arnise has disappeared. He will also tell you that if you will lower the drawbridge from the inside then he and his men will draw the enemy out.

RECEIVE ARROWS: Arrows of Fire (20).

Does he give you acid arrows if you not steal them ???

    After you have slain TorGal and cleared the keep from the invaders, come here to report of your success (that's if Nalia isn't in your party). You will gain lots of experience and, if you are a fighter, a possibility to get this keep as your Stronghold. Please see the Fighter Stronghold walkthrough. Nalia will mention that she is betrothed to Isaea Roenal. She fears that her husband-to-be will take control of the keep and abuse it. At this point she'll offer you to become the Lord of this keep, according to an old custom.

CLEAR THE KEEP: 45500 exp for each party member, 650 Gold.

    Troll

ICE TROLL: 174 exp.

    Side Entrance

    This is the secret entrance into the keep and leads to the Main Level.

    Courtyard

    Here you'll find the dog kennels  and four dogs: Rex, Sparky, Spot and Rover. If you are cruel and disregard the Animal Rights Watch, you can kill the dogs for their meat. You can then use this meat at the kitchen to cook Dog Stew.
    There's also an ugly Otuygh rumbling around.

OTYUGH: 5000 exp.
DOGS: 4 x 34 exp, Dog Meat (4).

    Once you lower the drawbridge, Captain Arat and his soldiers will fight through the courtyard and gain access to the main floor of the keep, from which point you will be on your own.

    Battlements

    If you ascend the stairs you'll end up being on the battlements near a catapult.

YUAN-TIS: 2 x 1500 exp, Long Sword (2).

    Stairs

    These stairs lead to the top floor library and are guarded by a single troll.

TROLL: 1400 exp.

    Lever

    You'll have to lower the drawbridge by pulling this lever if you want to receive Captain Arat's help.

LOWER THE DRAWBRIDGE: 29750 exp.

    Roof

    Here you'll find some more Yuan-Tis.

YUAN-TIS: 2 x 1500 exp, Long Sword (2).

Main Level (AR1302) later AR1306

    There are a lot of hidden doors throughout this level, so have one person detect them all the time.

    After you've cleansed the keep, this area will reload and become AR1306. However, there won't be any major changes to the level at all: just a few more servants and a Major Domo who will run your day to day matters.

    Entrance

    There is a locked door that leads to the supply room.

PICK THE LOCK; 950 exp.

    Supply room

    There is a multitude of stuff here.

    Check out the crate and a barrel for treasure.
LOOT: Light Crossbow +1, Arrows +2 (20), Bolts +2 (20), Bolts of Lightning (20), [Aganazzar's Scorcher], Potion of Defense, Potion of Extra Healing (5), Heavy Crossbow, Bullets (120), Darts (80).

    Room

    You will witness a grizzly death of a Servant by a Troll. Kill the Troll and check out all the chests.

TROLL: 1400 exp.
    Check three chests (one locked) and a table for treasure.
PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp;
LOOT: Bolts +2 (10), Bullets +2 (4), Bullets +1 (12), Darts +1 (29) Bolts of Lightning (6), [Protection from Normal Weapons], Potion of Insight, Sunstone Gem, 54 Gold, Bolts (80), Bullets (90), Throwing Axes (20), Throwing Daggers (60).

    Armory

    Here you will find Nalia's faithful servant Daleson. There's also a locked door leading northwest.
    Daleson will be quite surprised that someone used the back entrance to get inside the keep. Tell him that Nalia sent you. Daleson will mention tht this morning he's seen Lord de'Arnise still alive, trying to find the pieces of his flail. He will also tell you that there are about thirty trolls in the invasion force and the special "diggers" that seem to like dog stew, apparently more than anything else.

    What if you tell him that you double-crossed her ?

    The Hidden Forge

    This is lord de'Arnise' hidden forge. In order to reconstruct his flail you should first find the flail heads. There are three of them in this keep.

    Check out the chest for treasure.
LOOT: [Find Familiar], Rainbow Obsidian Necklace, 8 Gold.

    Statue room

    This seems to be the artsy statue room with a whole bunch of needless statues standing around. Be sure to check out the statue of a lion for a flail head. Bring this head to the forge in order to make the first variant of the Flail of Ages.

    Main room

    There is a troll wandering around this room, kill it.

TROLL: 1400 exp.

    Bedroom

    One little troll is guarding these sleeping quarters.

ICE TROLL: 174 exp.
    Check out the six chests (one locked) for some treasure.
PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp;
LOOT: [Breach], [Protection from Normal Weapons], Iol Gem, Silver Ring, 1 Gold, Arrows (40), Bolts (40), Bullets (30).

    Toilets

    Well somebody must've had really hard time getting it out. If you can, check out the contents of one of the toilets for a nice surprise =)

LOOT: Star Sapphire.

    Kitchen

    There's a cauldron here that you can use to cook the Dog Stew. You'll need enough Dog Meat to do that - from four dogs.

COOK THE STEW: 11500 exp, Dog Stew.
    Check out the sack in the kitchen.
LOOT: Dart of Stunning, 1 Gold.

    Stairs

    These stairs lead to the top floor of the keep.

TROLL: 1400 exp.

    Exits

    These exits lead to the keep's courtyard. Near one of these exits there is a trapped chest.

    Check out the trapped chest for treasure.
DISARM THE TRAP: 2750 exp;
PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp;
LOOT: Dagger +2, 450 Gold.

    Once you lower the drawbridge, de'Arnise troops will storm this entrance and stop - you should do the rest.

TROLL: 2400 exp.

Top floor (AR1303) later AR1307

    After you've cleansed the keep, this area will reload and become AR1307. However, there won't be any major changes to the level at all: just a few more servants.

    Stairs

    These are the stairs to the roof of the keep.

    Library

    Library is guarded by a Yuan-Ti mage and a weird Troll that splits in half when killed. Once you defeat them check out the bookcases for some scrolls and a Keep Key that will open most doors in the keep.

YUAN-TI MAGE: 7000 exp;
TROLL(S): 1400 exp;
ICE TROLL: 174 exp.
    Check out the three bookcases for some treasure.
LOOT: Keep Key, Bolts +1 (20), [Conjure Lesser Earth Elemental], [Minor Spell Turning], History of the North.

    This is where your weekly tax money will be deposited - if you happen to be a fighter and have this keep as your stronghold. Also the door to a secret corridor that was previously barred can now be opened.

    Room by the Stairs

    These are the stairs to the main floor of the keep.
    In this room you will be able to find some nice stuff.

    Check out the locked closet and a crate for treasure.
PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp;
LOOT: [Grease], [Color Spray], Arrows (80), Bolts (80), Throwing Axes (50), Throwing Daggers (40), Darts (60), Bullets (80).

    Bedroom 1

    There is not much in this bedroom, just check out the drawer for some stuff.

LOOT: Dagger +1, 35 Gold.

    Bedroom 2

    Here you'll find a Troll, albeit not sleeping but fully alert.

TROLL: 1400 exp.
    Check out the night table for treasure.
LOOT: Arrows of Piercing (20), [Detect Illusion], 9 Gold.

    Bedroom 3

    Door to this bedroom is locked and you will need the Keep Key in order to open it. Inside you will find a rather arrogant Lady Delcia Caan. You'll hear particularly funny comments with regard to Lady Caan if you have Korgan in your party.

    Secret Hall

    This secret room can be accessed via Lady Caan's bedroom. Inside you'll find a number of inactive golems. However, keep in mind that as soon as you touch the treasure at the end of the room, the golems will activate and pound you to bits. What you can do is force attack them one at a time or send a stealthed thief to take the treasure, run away and then use it to kill the golems.

IRON GOLEM: 13000 exp;
STONE GOLEMS: 2 x 8000 exp;
CLAY GOLEM: 8000 exp;
FLESH GOLEMS: 2 x 2000 exp.
    Check out the three statues at the other end of the hall.
LOOT: Flail Head (Fire), War Hammer +1, +4 vs. Giantkin, Elven Court Bow +3, Battle Axe +3, Frostreaver.

    Troll

    Past the room with the fountain you'll encounter another wimpy troll.

ICE TROLL: 174 exp.

    Stairs

    Before the door to the room with the stairs you'll find yet another Troll. The door is locked and needs the Keep Key in order to open it. Once you open it, you'll be able to ascend to the inaccessible part of the roof.

TROLL: 1400 exp.

    Bedroom 4

    The door to this bedroom is locked and requires the Keep Key to open it. Beware, the fireplace is trapped. There's also a hidden door that leads to a hidden corridor.

DISARM THE TRAP: 2750 exp.
LOOT: Wand of Frost.

    Storeroom

    You can get to this room via the secret corridor. Beware, the door here is trapped and locked.

DISARM THE TRAP: 2750 exp;
PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp.
    Check out the two chests for treasure.
LOOT: Bullets +2 (40), Darts of Stunning (20), Bolts of Lightning (20), Acid Arrows (20), [Spell Thrust], [Identify] Silver Ring, Darts (20).

    Lounge

    Here you will be attacked by one tough fighter, Glaicas, it seems that he fell under the control of the new master of the keep.

GLAICAS: 9500 exp, Flail Head (Acid), Potion of Extra Healing (2), Oil of Speed, Potion of Fire Giant Strength, 20 Gold, Full Plate Mail, Two Handed Sword.

    Bathroom

    There is nothing of interest in this room.

    Stairs

    These stairs lead down to the Basement.

Basement (AR1301)

    Room by the Stairs

    These stairs lead back to the top floor of the keep.
    There is a trapped chest here so be careful. Load up on ammunition and move into the next room.

    Check out the trapped chest, crate and a barrel for treasure.

    Torture chamber

    Here you'll encounter a Spectral Troll - a troll with stat draining ability, plus a couple of regular trolls.

SPECTRAL TROLL: 3500 exp;
TROLLS: 2 x 1400 exp.
    Check out the two iron maidens for a wee gold.
LOOT: 6 Gold.

    Supply room

    This is a tough room. Do not walk in here unprepared, especially if you have a low level party. The Umber Hulks can confuse the hell out of your party, it is their innate ability. For now, send an invisible character to scout ahead. If you feel confident - you can take them on but it will be a tough fight.
    What you could do is go to one of the prison cells (the one where Umber Hulks dug through) and leave Dog Stew there. This will prompt the Umber Hulks to leave the supply room and go eat the dog stew. You will then be able to pick them off one at a time.

PICK THE LOCK: 950 exp;
LOOT: Orc Leather +3, Bolts +2 (40), Bolts of Biting (40), Bullets +2 (40), Bullets +1 (40), Darts +1 (60), Silver Necklace, Sphene Gem, 16 Gold, Throwing Axes (40).

    Prison Cells and the Dig Site

    In one of the cells you'll find the tunnel that the Umber Hulks dug through. Put dog stew here and run or hide as the Umber Hulks will come charging in. Now you can dispatch them from a distance, one at a time, or ignore altogether.
    The rest of the cells hold nothing of interest.

TRICK UMBER HULKS INTO LEAVING: 18750 exp.
UMBER HULKS: 5 x 4000 exp.

    TorGal

    By talking to TorGal you'll learn that he was sent by someone 'Stronger' to invade this keep. The identity of this individual is not revealed during the conversation as TorGal attacks you.
    After you kill him take note of Lord de'Arnise' body lying on the ground. Apparently he's already dead. Well, do not forget to check out the locked pillar for treasure.

    After all is said and done, collect the treasure and return to the Fort (if Nalia is not in your party) to report of your success.
